Luther: Representation of gender

Camera

When Luther gets stabbed and falls on the floor and Ian is kicking him Alice comes in which immediately looks counter-stereotypical because it's not usual to for a women to come in and save in the man its stereotypical for the opposite to occur. The camera angle used is a tracking shot because camera has a smooth track which focuses on her when she is walking towards Ian and Luther. The same type of shot is also used when Mark walks in behind her. It provides a point of focus for the audience. Shallow focus is when one part of the image is in focus while the rest is out of focus or blurred. An example of this is when Alice is holding the gun over her shoulder. This is blurs out everything else and puts her in focus. This draws the audiences attention to a particular action/character. A hand-held camera is also used as soon as the clip starts this creates a shaky effect created when the cinematographer just holds the camera by hand. This has effect on the audience where it makes feel as if they are in the action/included with what's going on. A tracking shot was also used when Alice walked in, the camera followed her along while she was walking across towards Luther and Ian. This tracking shot made her seem like she was dominant and in control of what's going on. This is because she has a gun with there which all together is counter-stereotypical as you wouldn't expect a women to act this way.

Editing

Continuity editing is used in this scene because the action and the same story is used throughout the scene. This means that there is a continuous action which keeps the audiences attention on the story and what is currently going on. Shot-reverse-shot is used when they are all looking at each other, when one of them talks the camera shows their facial expressions. Fast-paced-editing is when all the scenes are edited together using lots of shots. This occurred when Luther was on the floe after being stabbed and they were all trying to decide whether they should kill him or not. Luther is shouting no and everyone else disagrees so it's jumping between them all trying to come up with a conclusion on what they should do. During this part of the scene Alice is also shown as being the one in charge and the one who will make the final decision because she has the gun with her. This is counter-stereotypical because it's not usual for a women to be make those decisions but more of a male type of stereotypical fashion to be doing. During the editing process most of the time the camera is showing both Alice and Luther. This shows that they are the main characters in the show. Especially Alice because of how much power she has all over them which again is counter-stereotypical.

Sound

Diegetic sound is also used throughout most of the scene because most of the sources were on screen. This would be things like shouting and talking in the background. Non-Diegeitc sound is also used in the scene because background music is playing throughout the whole video just to add that more tension towards the audience. Synchronous sound is also used because all the sounds that you hear in the scene are what is expected to be heard for example the echo when they shout and the stabbing of Luther by Ian. The sound of the gun is also part of this because it's what the audience is expected to hear when they see that she shot him.

Mise-en-scene

We can see that all of the characters have relationships with each other previously. This is because they all know each others names and have spoken to them before. All of them are wearing modern clothing which also makes the audience feel like they are with them and included in what is going on.
